Dental Discount Plans vs. Dental Insurance - Who Wins?
Author: Marilyn Katz

A Dental Plan Is On the Way!

Many of my clients ask me about the difference between a family dental plan and dental insurance. Let me start of by advising you to strongly consider participating in a group dental insurance benefit if your company offers it, especially if you job pays part of the premium or offers other tax incentives. However if you are one of the millions of working people who do not have dental benefits at work, you may want to consider a dental discount plan. And even if you do have a dental insurance plan at work, you are still subject to deductibles, copays, and exclusions, and may want to supplement your coverage with a very inexpensive dental discount plans.

Dental Insurance vs. Dental Discount Plans

Dental Insurance will pay part of your bill, if your dental work is a covered expense, you have paid your deductible, and not hit your yearly coverage maximum! Dental plans do not pay your bill, but they do offer you access to dental care at greatly reduced fees.

Now let me also add, that all dental discount plans are not the same, but many major insurers also access to their dental network at reduced prices. Dental discount plans are not insurance, but offer you access to their contracted dental health professionals at reduced costs. These large companies negotiate reduced rates to providers, and you can take advantage of their buying power. Some plans offer free, or extremely cheap, routine care like checkups, cleanings, and x rays. They also offer reduced fees on major work like crowns, cosmetic care, and orthodontics. Cosmetic car and orthodontics are often left out of major dental insurance plans.

You will not be subject to a waiting period, or need to be concerned about preexisting conditions. The large dental plans have an extensive network of dentists, and it is easy to search for your own favorite before you sign up! If you do not have dental insurance, you will certainly want to consider an inexpensive dental plan. If you do have dental insurance, check to see what the yearly maximums, deductibles, and copays are. Also not what services are covered! You will probably find that a dental discount plan can still save you money.

Keep Dental Costs Affordable

If you do not have dental insurance, a family dental discount plan is a very inexpensive way to keep your costs affordable. As I noted before, many routine visits are very cheap, and sometimes free! More expensive services are discounted from 40% to 60%. The money you would save on one crown would justify your dental discount plan for years.

If you do have dental insurance, a discount plan can still help you with expensive dental care, or services like cosmetics and orthodontics that may not be covered.
